Foi professor de ci\u00eancia pol\u00edtica da Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo (1990-1994) e da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. No exterior, foi, entre outros, pesquisador visitante do Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (1978), \u201cTinker Professor of Latin American Studies\u201d na Columbia University (1986), professor visitante na School of Education e Center for Studies on Higher Education, the University of California, Berkeley (1985), professor da c\u00e1tedra Joaquim Nabuco de Estudos Brasileira da Stanford University (2001), e pesquisador visitante na \u00c9cole Pratique des Autes \u00c9tudes in Paris (1982\/3), no Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences em Uppsala (1986), no St. Anthony\u2019s College, Oxford (1994), e no Centre for Brazilian Studies, Oxford (2003).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"pt-br\">No primeiro semestre de 2004, foi professor visitante de Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade de Harvard, ocupando a Robert F. Kennedy Professorship of Latin American Studies. Foi, por muitos anos, editor de\u00a0<em>Dados &#8211; Revista de Ci\u00eancias Sociais.<\/em>\u00a0Foi presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia e do Comit\u00ea de Pesquisa em Sociologia da Ci\u00eancia da International Sociological Association. Em 1996, recebeu a Gr\u00e3 Cruz da Ordem Nacional do M\u00e9rito Cient\u00edfico do governo Brasileiro, e, em 2018, a Medalha Nacional do M\u00e9rito Educativo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"pt-br\">Seus primeiros trabalhos tratam de temas de desenvolvimento pol\u00edtico em uma perspectiva hist\u00f3rica e comparada, com \u00eanfase no Brasil. Depois, passou a se dedicar aos temas relativos aos aspectos sociais e pol\u00edticos da produ\u00e7\u00e3o do conhecimento na ci\u00eancia, tecnologia e na educa\u00e7\u00e3o; mais recentemente, tem se interessado pelas quest\u00f5es de pobreza e pol\u00edtica social. Participou, em 1985, da Comiss\u00e3o Nacional de Reformula\u00e7\u00e3o da Educa\u00e7\u00e3o Superior Brasileira, da qual foi relator. Em 1993\/94. dirigiu uma equipe de trabalho encarregada pelo Minist\u00e9rio de Ci\u00eancia e Tecnologia e o Banco Mundial de elaborar um policy paper sobre a pol\u00edtica brasileira de ci\u00eancia e tecnologia. As conclus\u00f5es deste trabalho foram publicadas em tr\u00eas volumes pela Editora da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Get\u00falio Vargas. Em 2000, realizou um estudo para o Escrit\u00f3rio da UNESCO na Am\u00e9rica Latina (OREALC) sobre o futuro da educa\u00e7\u00e3o na Am\u00e9rica Latina e no Caribe. Em 2006-7, coordenou um estudo sobre universidade e desenvolvmento na Am\u00e9rica Latina, com apoio da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Ford. He studied sociology, political science and public administration at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil (1958-1961), attended UNESCO&#8217;s Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Santiago de Chile (1962-3), and obtained his Ph. D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and\u00a0 a recipient of the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\">He has lived in Rio de Janeiro since 1969, working and teaching at the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Get\u00falio Vargas and, until 1988, at the Instituto Universit\u00e1rio de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro. He was a professor of political science and research director of the Research Nucleus on Higher Education at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo between 1989 and 1994 . From May 1994 to December 1998, was President of Brazil&#8217;s Institute of Geography and Statistics (Funda\u00e7\u00e3o IBGE). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\">Short term appointments and fellowships during these years included the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (1978), the Tinker Professorship of Latin American Studies at Columbia University (1986), a visiting professorship at the School of Education and the Center for Studies on Higher Education of the University of California, Berkeley (1985), the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo (1987), the Nabuco Professor of Brazilian Studies at the Center for Latin American Studies of Stanford University (2001) and brief periods as visiting scholar at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (1986) the St. Antonys College (1994) and the Centre for Brazilian Studies (2003), Oxford University. In the spring of 2004 he was the Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor of Latin American Studies at Harvard Univesity, assigned to the Department of Sociology. He is a former President of the Brazilian Sociological Association, and was chairman of the research group on the sociology of science and technology of the International Sociological Association. He was for many years the editor of Dados &#8211; Revista de Ci\u00eancias Sociais, and belongs to the editorial board of several academic journals in Latin America and Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\">His earlier work dealt with questions of political change in a historical and comparative perspective, with special emphasis on Brazil.
